~~NOTOC~~ [<>]
Dotted Regulator of a transposable element, rDt, at A1; responding a1-m alleles express colored dots on colorless kernels and purple sectors on brown B1 Pl1 plants.

Dotted Selfed homozygous Dt1 ear with aleurone color segregating for colorless Dt responding a1 allele and red pr1 kernels showing dots of purple or red on all of the colorless kernels. Also note a purple endosperm (pr pr Pr) kernel (Center) with a red sector which could be either a chromosome break loss of the one Pr or the insertion of a transposon into that one Pr locus or an extremely rare spontaneous mutation of Pr to pr in a primordial aleurone cell.

----
Dotted Selfed a1, Pr1 Pr1, in1, Dt3, wx1, R1 r1 ear showing intense brown pigmentation in the aleurone and pericarp of all kernels that are colorless due to a1 with R1. Note scattered colored dots due to Dt3. The completely colorless kernels are due to r1 r1, and slightly brown kernels are r1 r1 R1. Brown kernels with occasional purple dots are R1--, Homozygous a1 and Dt3 of the a Dt transposon system with modifiers restricting the frequency of transposon activity to occasional rare events. This ear is a remarkable demonstration of the phenotypic display of many heritable factors which can be seen in the study of maize.
